AI Chatbots for Personalized Assignment Support Beyond the Classroom for Various Disciplines

Description

This workshop addresses the growing need for scalable, personalized language support in higher education. While general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs) offer vast potential, their effective pedagogical use requires thoughtful, structured integration. This session explores how purpose-built AI chatbots can move beyond generic text generation to deliver targeted, discipline-specific writing support that complements traditional instruction.

We will examine the strengths and limitations of publicly available AI tools for language learning, followed by an introduction to three specialized chatbots developed under our Quality Enhancement Support Scheme project (02/QESS/2024). Through live demonstrations and case-sharing, participants will see how these tools—designed to enhance Chinese and English writing—can be seamlessly embedded into language courses at SYU. These examples will equip educators with practical strategies for designing coursework that encourages appropriate, scaffolded use of AI to improve writing proficiency.

The session will conclude with a look at future development plans and a discussion on building a sustainable ecosystem for AI-assisted language learning across disciplines.
