“Service-Exposure” challenge: Expanding student's horizon for achieving placement success

Description

This workshop will share our teaching reflection and development process in providing students teamwork challenges to broaden their horizons in relational contexts relevant to their professional training preparation.

As a proactive teaching strategy, the social work PPE teachers have adopted an expanded focus on “Service Exposure” to enrich students’ real-world experience that integrate social services with academic learning to equip our year 1 students to meet the community needs of various target groups, such as single elderly persons, children of ethnic minorities, and people with intellectual disabilities, to name just a few.

Socia work students entering the challenging world of field work placement during their year 3 and year 4 program of study need to have certain transferable skills, appropriate practical knowledge and good working attitudes to succeed. Pre-Placement Exposure (PPE) is a pre-requisite for fieldwork practicum of social work year 1 and year 2 students. The “Service-Exposure” project is part of it. It is a project-based, experiential learning opportunity that we offer to year 1 students in the second semester till the early summertime with the collaboration of NGOs in Hong Kong.
